“Where Would You Rather Be Than In Vail?”: Vail near top of realty company’s climate-resilient resorts list of world’s ski areas

By | Vail Real Estate | No Comments

VAIL — As Earth’s climate warms, the future of skiing may be found at higher elevations. If so, then Vail seems poised to continue its success. A recent report from Savills, an international realty firm based in London, included a list of ski resorts that stand to be “resilient” as Earth’s climate continues to change. The resorts at the top of the list generally have high-elevation terrain, as well as snowmaking equipment. The report put Vail and Aspen second and fourth, respectively, on a list of those resorts. Zermatt and Saas-Fee, both in Switzerland, were first and third on the list. Interestingly, Vail Resorts owns three resorts among the top 11 on the Savills list: Vail, Heavenly (sixth) and Whistler Blackcomb (11th). A recent Vail Resorts investors’ report lists factors that come into play when the company considers new acquisitions. Elevation isn’t mentioned, but “location” is part of the strategy. That can include everything from proximity to cities — in the case of the company’s urban ski areas — to accessibility. Weather might play a role in considering a resort’s location. Vail Resorts was singled out in the report for its efforts in managing its energy use, finding more efficient…

When will the Vail real estate market see its first home sale of $30M or more?

By | Vail Real Estate | No Comments

EAGLE COUNTY — Some records last a long time — Roger Maris’ 61 home runs in 1961 was a record that stood for 37 years. Some records fall more quickly. In January, the $23 million sale of a home on Vail’s Rockledge Road was touted as a new residential record sale for the town. In August, a home on Mill Creek Circle sold for $28.7 million. That’s believed to be a new record for the town, but the record may not stand for long. A handful of homes in Vail’s ultra-exclusive slopeside areas — Forest Road, Rockledge Road, Beaver Dam Road and a few others — are listed for $30 million or more. A home on Beaver Dam Road is listed at $34 million, as is a home on Forest Road, and a pair of new homes on Vail Road are listed at $30 million each. BIG, QUIET SALES Ron Byrne and Associates Real Estate in Vail has the listing on Forest Road. Company founder Ron Byrne said he believes it won’t be long until one of those homes sets yet another high-sale record. When one of those sales does happen, Byrne said he expects it to happen quickly, and…

Vail Resorts expands to Australia

By | Vail Events | No Comments

Vail Resorts has added another resort to its collection with the purchase of the largest ski resort in Australia, marking the first international foray for the Broomfield company and creating what its CEO said could be a strong draw to bring tourists from that continent to Vail-operated ski areas across America. The $136 million acquisition of Perisher Ski Resort, funded with cash on hand and the revolver portion of Vail Resorts’ senior credit facility, is expected to be completed sometime later this year. The company will receive 100 percent of the stock in the entities that operate Perisher from Murray Publishers Pty Ltd and Transfield Corporate Pty Ltd in Sydney, and it will take possession of all four of the resort areas that comprise Perisher — Perisher Valley, Smiggin Holes, Blue Cow and Guthega — along with ski school, lodging, food and beverage, retail/rental and transportation operations. The resort is in the southeastern Australian state of New South Wales, roughly midway between the cities of Sydney and Melbourne. Vail Resorts (NYSE: MTN) — which operates the Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone ski areas in Colorado — has expanded its national holdings significantly in recent years. It acquired Kirkwood, a…
