Bode Miller is setting aside his skis for the season because of a balky left knee. The five-time Olympic medalist had a minor procedure performed on the knee earlier this month with the hope of quickly returning to the circuit but when Miller recently arrived back in Europe, he experienced more discomfort in the knee and opted for another season-ending surgery. Fortunately for ski racing, his future plans seem centered more on rehab than retirement. “I love ski racing and I love being active so I hope for a solid recovery and to get back to training as soon as possible,” Miller said. “I’m still having fun and as long as skiing is enjoyable, I’m going to continue to do it.” Miller had four podium finishes this season, including a nerve-testing victory on the challenging Birds of Prey downhill course at Beaver Creek in December. “Winning again at Beaver Creek was pretty special,” said Miller. The knee first began bothering Miller while he was competing on an icy slope in Sochi, Russia, a test run for the 2014 Winter Games. He tried to ski through the pain the next weekend in Bansko, Bulgaria, and then decided to return to the…

I’m going to let you in on a tradition for Vail locals today. A barbecue picnic in Blue Sky Basin is my favorite thing ever to do in the winter! When skiing in Blue Sky Basin, you will feel like you have left the world behind. Its quiet and vast surroundings with pillows of powder make you feel very secluded. After a few runs of unbelievable skiing, locals unload their backpacks of anything from bratwurst and beers to steaks and bubbly. I have even been known to make a mean tequila slushy utilizing freshly fallen snow. Hot grills and picnic tables await skiers and snowboarders for public use and an afternoon shared with friends you will never forget. Following an adventure at Blue Sky Basin, you will most likely want to purchase Vail real estate. Stop by Ron Byrne & Associates on Bridge Street or give us a call at 970.476.1987.
In a valley known for dreaming the impossible and being able to bring it to life, the Vail Symposium is taking learning and intellect to the forefront. Founded in the early days of Vail, the Vail Symposium is like a sleeper-cell of intellectuals, hovering just under the radar of Vail’s party-loving, Street Beat-dancing, slope-carving residents, just waiting to appear in sudden random acts of culture. The educational equivalent of an air-to-ground missile striking at our most vulnerable organs, our brains, the Vail Symposium acts as our moral and thought-provoking compass through events such as last weekend’s “Vail Vignettes” theatrical event and their ongoing lectures on global, political and artistic issues. Thursday evening’s lecture by adventurer Neal Petersen is sure to be one such landmark event as he talks about his journeys. PBS has aired a documentary about his life titled “No Barriers – the Story of Neal Petersen,” and his autobiography, “Journey of a Hope Merchant,” won a NOBA award. Petersen completed the 1998-99 Around Alone yacht race, journeying 27,000 miles and nine months at sea alone and in a yacht he designed and built himself. Neal is a natural storyteller—riveting, engaging and highly entertaining as he will share his…
