Gasthof Gramshammer celebrates 50 years as a Vail icon

True beauty lasts, and that’s why Sheika Gramshammer has been the belle of the ball for a half century as she and Pepi greet Gasthof Gramshammer guests. Vail’s Gasthof Gramshammer opened this week in 1964, amid a flurry of activity in the heart of the fledgling resort. It’s a prime location and the only Vail Village business still operated by its original owners. Pepi and Sheika still have an apartment above the store where they live most of the time. “We still live above the business because we still love living in Vail,” Sheika said. “Vail is our home. It was our first home together and the only home we’ve ever had.” They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in February and celebrate their 50th year in business this week. Vail Holidaze 2014

This holiday season, spend time enjoying classic wintertime activities and treasured holiday traditions in Vail during Vail Holidaze. The Vail Holidaze 2014 schedule includes the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony in Slifer Square, the Torchlight Parade on Vail Mountain, and a fireworks display. On Sunday, December 21 at 5:00 pm, gather in Slifer Square near the covered bridge for the Tree Lighting Ceremony. Sip on a free cup of hot chocolate, and wait for the exciting moment when the lights are switched on. Also, look forward to a festive a capella performance and a few words from Vail’s mayor to get everyone in the holiday spirit. After the Tree Lighting Ceremony, head over to Bridge Street for the Lantern Walk. Watch as people of all ages carry their homemade paper lanterns up the street to Mountain Plaza. Also, you and the family can show off your own glowing lanterns during the Lantern Walk. Art in Vail is to host two paper lantern workshops on December 21 at the Vail Public Library.
