Eagle-Vail’s Mikaela Shiffrin on Saturday became the third-youngest slalom world champion ever, overcoming a .18-second deficit in the second run to win the slalom at the World Alpine Ski Championships in Schladming, Austria. Just 25 days shy of her 18th birthday, Shiffrin has won three times on the regular World Cup circuit this season and leads the season discipline standings. She’s the youngest women’s world champion in any discipline since American Diane Roffe-Steinrotter won the giant slalom world championship in 1985. “I thought, ‘I hope it holds.’” Shiffrin said of her second run. “I was thinking so many things. It was one of those times when everything was a blur, and that’s when you know it’s good. I’ve been taking it day by day and right now I’m just taking it second by second.” First-run leader Frida Hansdotter, of Sweden, wound up with bronze. Austria’s Mikaela Kirchgasser took silver in front of sold-out partisan crowd of 30,000 screaming Austrian fans….

The mountain’s recently built, 22-foot monster of a halfpipe – or superpipe, as some call it – looms above the base of the peak like a gaping mouth. Sitting at 600 feet long, it was for a few weeks touted as the longest halfpipe in North America, until Sun Valley Resort in Idaho recently built one slightly longer. However, as some pipe builders point out, everyone claims the longest pipe, but there’s no standard measure, and they are often measured by length, not necessarily height. Resort-to-resort one-upping aside, the bottom line is that Vail’s pipe is big, and it will be the site of one of the biggest snowboard competitions in…
