Gear from ’62, Vail’s Opening Season

By | Vail Real Estate | No Comments

Join Ron Byrne & Associates real estate for a stroll down memory lane… It was December 1962 – winter in the Rockies – and Colorado’s newest ski resort was about to set its newly built gondola into motion, carrying its first customers. As Vail’s founders and early employees admit, they were far more worried about getting the operation running and transporting the small number of opening-day skiers than they were about appearances or fanfare. However, over the next few years, Vail acquired a young, hip crowd of residents and regulars that lent sense of style to the fledging village and ski mountain. You can bet that just like today, style and equipment choice were duly noted on the slopes. In the ‘60s, skiing established itself as a glamorous sport, and the styles of the day followed suit. Until then, ski outfits largely consisted of several layers of wool and maybe a cotton shirt, like what was worn by 10th Mountain Division soldiers (the Army had figured out a layering system that helped keep skin relatively dry and warm), according to the Colorado Ski and Snowboard Museum’s Curator of Collections Erica Garcia. Throughout the first half of the century, most skiers…

“White Christmas” – from Hollywood to Vail

By | Vail Real Estate | No Comments

When families in America snuggle around the fire talking about their ideals of a perfect Christmas, they think that what they describe can only be found on a movie-set, one of such technicolor abundance that its heart-warming effects could never be found in the real world. They are wrong, because every one of those movies is only trying to live up to the ideal of Vail at Christmas.  Sorry Bing Crosby, it’s time to move over and let our local crooners into the spotlight! This year, Vail Resorts is bringing back the festive holiday atmosphere for the kiddies with the Vail Family Holidaze.  Vail comes alive with lights, sounds, events and the cheer of the holiday season during December. From holiday concerts, world-class ice skating shows with world champion skaters like Todd Eldredge and Ryan Bradley, Kids Zone activities and New Year’s Eve entertainment, you won’t find a more festive atmosphere in which to spend quality time with the family than Vail. Please see below for full event schedules.  We hope to see you there! Thursday, December 20 2-5pm: Candy Cane Patrol, Golden Peak, Vista Bahn & Lionshead base areas 3-5pm: Kids Zone, Vail Village & Lionshead 3:15-4pm: Skate with the Stars, Solaris Plaza…

snow snow snow!

At Ron Byrne & Associates real estate in Vail, we are thrilled to see the snow falling from our office! VAIL, Colorado — The National Weather Service forecast for Vail shows chances of snow throughout the weekend. The weather pattern has shifted this month to a much welcomed snowier pattern. Colder temperatures and storm tracks are showing good chances of snow again — enough new snow to account for new terrain openings at both Vail and Beaver Creek this week. Powder forecaster Joel Gratz, who runs www.opensnow.com, shows anywhere from 7 to 17 inches of new snow falling at Vail by Monday night, and anywhere from 8 to 18 inches at Beaver Creek in that same time frame. The weekend storm is expected to favor the southern San Juan Mountains, but there’s more good news for the rest of the state, including the Vail Valley, to come. “A strong cold front will head east off the Pacific on Tuesday, will hit Utah Tuesday night, and then bring heavy snow to most of Colorado on Wednesday. Wednesday should (hopefully…it’s still five days away…but things are looking good) be a day with ‘free re-fills’ of powder through the day for most mountains,”…

Why Do You Love Vail?

By | Vail Real Estate | No Comments

Vail, in their own words Locals wish Vail a fond 50th with love letter to the town and mountain.  A nearly inordinate number of things went right prior to Vail’s opening day on Dec. 15, 1962: WWII was 10 years past and the Vietnam War had yet to begin; the ski industry had taken huge strides forward in terms of ski technology and overall interest in recreation; founders Pete Seibert and Earl Eaton convinced nearly 20 investors from across the U.S. to give $5,000 apiece, all with little formal experience. It was a good time to be in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.  As with any new endeavor, the fledgling resort encountered plenty of problems – the first season was woefully dry until a blizzard hit on Dec. 17, a godsend much like this year’s recent snowstorm – but the first residents were a committed, occasionally naive bunch, and failure was never an option. How could it be when the mountain was home to the best untapped skiing in the state, from the legendary Riva Ridge on the front side to Sun Up and Sun Down bowls on the back?    The resort and its namesake town have come incredibly far…

Guide to live music in the Vail Valley

By | Vail Real Estate | No Comments

With the demolition of Vail’s beloved Club 8150 for the construction of residences in 2007, restaurants and bars of the valley had to step up and fill the void for live music. While at the moment there is no major venue in the area designed solely for the purpose of hosting live music, there are many places throughout the valley that do double duty, and do it surprisingly well. All over the valley there are a multitude of restaurants and taverns shows — be it local or national, live or electronic, bluegrass or dub step, if you search for it, you will find it. While this is by no means a cohesive list, here is a lineup of Ron Byrne & Associates favorite haunts for hearing live jams. Vail Shakedown Bar The newly anointed Shakedown Bar sits at the top of Bridge Street in Vail Village. Down the stairs into the bar, you will typically find the Scott Rednor Band warming the crowd up, or Steve Meyer opening for some of the musical acts the bar has lined up for this season. While the stage is small and quarters are tight, the space just adds to the intimate feeling you…
