The Sweet Just Keeps Getting Sweeter…

By | Vail Real Estate | No Comments

From the creators of Sweet Basil in Vail comes a new restaurant scheduled to open in December 2012. For 35 years Sweet Basil has created a standard for mountain dining and the new restaurant Mountain Standard will take from that tradition and create its own niche with a rustic, relaxed tavern atmosphere. Mountain Standard will primarily feature a cooking method that has been around for tens of thousands of years — cooking over an open fire. A wood burning grill and rotisserie will be the centerpieces of the new restaurant. The menu will feature rustic, bold flavors using ingredients from the Rocky Mountain region and beyond. “Dining, as a whole, has become more casual,” said Kevin Clair, co-owner. “We wanted to capitalized on the success of Sweet Basil but provide our guests with a more casual atmosphere and dining experience with Mountain Standard. We believe the two restaurants will be a great compliment to one another.” The new restaurant is located in the heart of Vail Village along East Gore Creek Drive just steps away from the Gore Creek and around the corner from Sweet Basil. Mountain Standard is located in the spaces formerly occupied by Blu’s restaurant and a…

Powder and the fashion

By | Vail Real Estate | No Comments

The Arabelle resort in Vail. Robert Upe ticks off the boutique labels as he joins skiing’s high society on the gondolas at the Colorado Vail resort. Despite a night of fiery salsa and tequila, I’m walking with purpose. Skis over my shoulder, helmet on, goggles down and jacket zipped to my chin. Snowflakes swirl about. It’s morning at Vail ski resort in Colorado. I press into the crush of skiers and snowboarders trying to get on the Eagle Bahn Gondola. It has snowed all night. Everyone is here. Powder has covered the resort’s immense trails and cloaked the fir trees in white. Sheets of snow slide off the chairlifts as they crank up for the day. Bistro Fourteen at Eagles Nest. I hear a chirpy breakfast radio announcer say the snowfall is also slowing down traffic on the nearby Interstate 70, which cuts through the mountains from Denver to Vail, a stretch of about 150 kilometres. I wonder if there is a convoy of Denver office workers speeding west in beefy SUVs to gatecrash this classic powder morning. The cocky twentysomethings ahead of me in the lift line are hooping and hollering and they haven’t even got on the gondola…

3 Weeks left for Ski Conditioning!

By | Vail Real Estate | No Comments

The snow is here!  Everyone is getting excited for Vail’s 50th Anniversary Ski Season.  It’s time to start an exercise program and train to ward off injuries – and prep for your best season in years!! It’s the same story every season: The lifts start spinning, and it’s all but impossible to avoid hitting the slopes like your last run was a week ago. The next morning, you wake up with the ski bum equivalent of a hangover. Your abs, legs, ankles and joints are throbbing, and in the worst case, you brutalized your body to the point of injury. Nearly all die-hard skiers or boarders have been there, but this season doesn’t have to be déjà vu all over again. With little more than three weeks left until Vail Mountain’s opening day on Nov. 17, there’s just enough time to begin a workout regimen to prepare for those crusty early turns. Jake Wurth, the new director of strength and conditioning at Ski and Snowboard Club Vail, says that before any training began, he pinpointed the bad habits that lead to movement dysfunctions – poor posture, improper hip and knee alignment, lazy weight lifting. Along with bad form, he claims…

Fall Season in Vail Celebrates Vail Restaurant Month

By | Vail Real Estate | No Comments

Vail Restaurant Month is four weeks of food and fun in the Rocky Mountains. With the aspens turning a bright golden yellow, and beautiful autumn days filled with sunshine, there could be no better way to spend a fall vacation than in Vail during Vail Restaurant Month. Each week of this celebration of food right here in Vail, Colorado is given a theme. The first two weeks of Vail Restaurant Month were held in September, with the first week’s theme being Market to Table, and the second week’s theme as Health & Outdoors, which is a fitting theme for a mountain town like Vail known for its abundance of hiking trails, biking trails, opportunities for a round of golf or a tennis match, and a variety of other treasured outdoor Colorado activities. The first week of Vail Restaurant Month focused on cooking with and enjoying fresh, local, and organic ingredients. Week one’s events calendar presented a slew of educational seminars and culinary demonstrations all in an effort to inspire individuals to be conscious about the benefits of eating locally grown foods. The second week of Vail Restaurant Month pointed a spotlight on healthy eating and an active lifestyle. During week…

Gates Foundation donated $900,000 to Eagle County School District

By | Vail Real Estate | No Comments

GYPSUM, Colorado — Bill and Melinda Gates visit one school a year, and Monday it was Eagle Valley High School. Yeah, our Eagle Valley High School. Bill and Melinda Gates, among the world’s richest people, are serious about education reform and followed some of their money to Gypsum. The Eagle County school district was awarded a $900,000 grant from the Gates’s Colorado Legacy Foundation, part of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The money is helping fund changes in curriculum, as well as the way students, teachers and principals are evaluated. Monday, they spent the day in Eagle Valley High School taking a first-hand look. “This is a huge point of pride for our school,” said Greg Doan, Eagle Valley principal. This wasn’t a walk-through. They arrived around 8 a.m. and left just before the final bell — around 3 p.m. No one knew they were coming because, well, almost no one knew they were coming. Security was tight and police officers were easier to spot Monday around Eagle Valley than a teacher’s pet. “We were asked to keep it a secret, and we did,” Doan said. The news started popping up on Eagle Valley students’ Facebook pages and in…

Vail’s New Gondola

By | Vail Real Estate | No Comments

Vail will celebrate its 50th anniversary in December 2012 with the planned installation of a new, state-of-the art gondola to replace the Vista Bahn Express Lift (#16) in Vail Village.  The cabins will be designed to carry 10 passengers and each will feature heated, cushioned seats and Wi-Fi access for guests. With a speed of 1,200 feet per minute, the gondola will be the fastest gondola of its type in the world, creating a 40 percent increase in uphill capacity. The new gondola will have a ride time of 7.5 minutes versus the 9 minute ride time of the existing Vista Bahn Express Lift (#16), which it will replace. Construction of the gondola began immediately following the closing of the mountain in April and will be operational for opening day of the 2012-2013 ski season – Nov. 16, 2012 – just in time to celebrate Vail’s 50th anniversary. “We’re thrilled not only to have the opportunity to work with Vail once again, but also to bring such a tremendous advancement in lift technology to the industry in North America,” said Rick Spear, president at Leitner-Poma of America, Inc. The lift manufacturer most recently constructed Vail’s High Noon Express Lift (#5), a high-speed…
