Ski season is over: Make way for an idyllic summer escape in Vail, instead

By | Vail Real Estate | No Comments

Ski season may be at its end, but that’s no reason to put ski resorts out of your mind. In fact, if you’re like me, you look more forward to summer in the mountains than winter. After all, what better way to escape the oppressive Texas heat than to hop up to some refreshing mountain air for a few days? As a creature of habit, I confess I’ve spent most of my summer mountain trips in Breckenridge. The quaint little town offers everything you could ask for in the way of shops, restaurants, outdoor recreation, laid back atmosphere and of course, mountain breezes. But if you’re looking for something with just a little more panache; a place that offers the rusticity of mountain life combined with a little luxury and pampering, I’d pass the exit for Breckenridge on I-25 and head about 30 minutes over the pass to Vail. When it comes to excellent hotels, a full stable of delectable restaurants and a wide variety of summer mountain activities, you really can’t beat Vail. Yes, I know. Vail is synonymous with skiing. And, as I soon found out during the week of Easter, it’s the top destination for international skiers…

When forever meant Forever

By | Vail Real Estate | No Comments

Imagine starting a major league baseball team and landing Alex Rodriguez to anchor your infield, when A-Rod was in his prime. Vail’s founders swung for the fences when Pepi Gramshammer agreed to ski Vail on April 17, 1962, eight months before the resort opened. That was two days after winning the final race in the professional ski racing season at Loveland. “I’ve never seen so much snow,” Pepi said, his bright blue eyes sparkling under his silver hair, sitting the lobby of Gastof Gramshammer. “It was the most beautiful day we’ve ever had in ski country.” He has positioned his soft armchair so he can see the front of Vail Mountain and the run named for him, “Pepi’s Face.” Pepi scoots up to the front of his chair as his left hand makes a sweeping gesture across the front of the mountain. Those blue eyes sparkle and he begins to explain what he remembers — and he remembers it all, perfectly. “I never stopped it was so beautiful,” he said. He says it’s true about that day, his good luck, and his adorable bride Sheika who’s celebrating her birthday today. But before we can tell you that story, we have…

World Pond Skimming Championships

By | Vail Real Estate | No Comments

The legendary World Pond Skimming Championships presented by ROCKSTAR returns to Lake Golden Peak at Vail Mountain’s Golden Peak base area on April 15, 2012. The venue will open at 1:30pm with expos and giveaways from event sponsors, and the competition will get going at 3:00pm. The annual competition entails floatable (and sometimes sinkable) athletes launching themselves off an on-snow jump onto an icy pond in attempt to successfully exit the pond on both feet. Competitors will vie for both fame and glory in a showing that defies the laws of physics – and perhaps even common sense.

Dowd-Junction Trail Opens Early

By | Vail Real Estate | No Comments

In a year that shall be hallmarked by its crazy weather and unprecedented events, we have just seen another first.  The Dowd Junction recreation trail has already reopened for the 2012 summer season.  In a move sure to please the Valley’s bikers, roller bladers and walkers, the opening is several weeks earlier than most years due to the early warm weather, so while it may be bad for our snowpack, there is always a silver lining to those with their eyes on the sunshine!  Opening the path requires the installation of a wildlife protection screen which allows for continued use of the path during the deer migration season, which you will see on your drive through Down Junction.  The Town of Vail anticipates that the entire path through the upper part of the Valley will be open by April 20th. For more information on joining the Vail community, contact Ron Byrne & Associates.

New Gondola for Vail Village!

By | Vail Real Estate | No Comments

Although the soft ending to the ski season may leave most of us thinking of summer, the lack of snow near the village will allow  Vail Mountain to get an early start on a new gondola in Vail Village the day after the ski season ends. Construction will begin April 16, and the gondola will be operational for opening day of the 2012-13 ski and snowboard season Nov. 16, just in time to celebrate Vail’s 50th anniversary. “The new gondola will be a tremendous addition to the guest experience in Vail, adding significant improvements in comfort, capacity and ride time for skiers and snowboarders out of Vail Village,” said Chris Jarnot, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Vail Mountain. “I can’t think of a better way to kick off Vail’s 50th anniversary than with a new, state-of-the-art gondola in the same location where the very first Gondola One was built in 1962.” The new gondola will be the first of its kind in North America and with a speed of 1,200 feet per minute, it will be the fastest gondola of its type in the world, creating a 40 percent increase in uphill capacity. The silver gondola cabins,…

Vail Library Improvements

By | Vail Real Estate | No Comments

After 30 years, the Vail Public Library will get a complete makeover during the next few months, with a focus on improving access and capabilities for community events and classes. “The growth of technology is incredibly important to us,” said librarian Lori Banes. “The  whole focus is to give the library a much needed face lift.” The $2 million project will require a temporary closure with a grand reopening set for early July and temporary library services available across the street in the Dobson Ice Arena. Barnes said the improvements include all new book shelving and new lighting, as well as a central service desk and a new tech center in the current staff area. The idea is to create a space that allows for the use of databases like Skype, language programs and even the use of cell phones, she said. Right now, in our community room, there’s no technology aspect, so we’re adding that … to make it more of a usable community space and allow for audio-visual presentations, showing movies and other interactive presentations. The Friends of the Library are putting their name on that piece,” she said. The downstairs area, once used for employee housing, will…
